Each beach had a specific name code and was assigned to different Allied forces, with the Americans landing at Utah and Omaha, the British at Gold and Sword, and the Canadians at Juno.
This historic day, known as D-Day, marked the beginning of the liberation of Nazi-occupied Western Europe.
Today, these beaches are rich with monuments, museums and cemeteries that pay tribute to the thousands of soldiers who fought and fell during this massive operation.
